“In the law enforcement community, technology and progress often lag behind civilian consumers who may not be constrained by the limited resources of tax-provided budgets. Applicable advances in technology have been ignored due to cost or begrudgingly integrated into common, everyday use by skeptical or untrusting administrators. For example, I wrote reports in almost the identical manner (pen and paper) for almost 40 years before computers became the technology of choice for reports and so much more. Progress is painstakingly slow.

In the mid-1960’s portable radios were only a “wish list” item for most departments. As portable radios became the “norm” in law enforcement, cruiser-based communications slowly assumed a secondary role. Portable radios, even the early models, were a technological “leap” over previous means of communication. Once an officer completed the necessary “modifications” (usually high-tech rubberbands) to insure the corded microphone didn’t separate from the uniform shirt velcro patch and entwine around legs during a foot chase or physical confrontation, all was well. Various microphone adaptations included a coiled cord, stretching the cord across the officer’s back to keep it out of the way, and cliping the mic low on the front of the uniform shirt as a means of “cord control.” I lived with those damn cords for 35 years, wondering why someone didn’t invent a better technology.

Finally, someone did. FreeLinc, of Salt Lake City, Utah has come up with the perfect solution to mic cord madness. The FreeLinc FreeMic 200 is a WIRELESS speaker-microphone adaptable to a wide range of manufactured radios. An AC power adapter connects effortlessly to my Motorola XTS 5000 portable radio. Once the FreeMic and the adapter are linked or paired, it’s business as usual, except that I am no longer tripping over a microphone cord! Transmission/reception clarity is excellent and the FreeMic works just like a corded microphone but without the inherent drawbacks of a cord. But it gets even better. FreeLinc also offers the FreeMotion 200 Wireless Headset, which uses the same power adapter as the FreeMic 200 but replaces the FreeMic with an over-the-ear style headset. The FreeMotion Headset takes a little getting used to in terms of having an object stuck in your ear for 8 hours a day. However, the convenience is nothing short of fantastic. The FreeMotion does not give the same audio clarity of the FreeMic, but is well within acceptable tolerances.

FreeLinc has provided state-of-the-art communications technology to law enforcement at a very reasonable and affordable cost. I highly recommend the FreeLinc 200 and the FreeMic 200 as a permanent alternative to conventional corded microphone communications.”

“The Wheat Ridge SWAT team has been using the Freelinc wireless headset system for the past year. Operators, negotiators and commanders have all found the system to be simple, effective and reliable in a tactical environment.
We typically work in close proximity to one another during operations and have experienced no bleed over between units. The wireless capability has saved operators from catching connecting wires on fences, furniture and other hazards typically faced during operations. Touching the earpiece to transmit is easy, intuitive and reduces inadvertent transmissions.

Team commanders and negotiators have found the Freelinc system to be beneficial. The negotiations team and commanders frequently work out of vans or buses that contain several people involved in the decision making process of an operation. These staff members have found the Freelinc system to be particularly helpful in high-noise environments, as they are able to hear their radios directly through their earpieces, rather than relying on an external speaker.

Overall, we have been quite pleased with the Freelinc system, both the equipment and service received.”

“I purchased the FreeMic 200 approximately 2 years ago. I work in a very large Police Department, we answer over 500,000 calls of service a year. So from the time I call in service, until my tour of duty is over I am constantly receiving dispatched assignments on my radio. On daily patrol, assist officer calls, and the classic foot pursuit the FreeMic never failed me. This product is FLAWLESS. I was recently detailed to the Essex/Union Auto Theft Task Force, which is a multi-jurisdictional Task Force with both Essex and Union Counties in New Jersey. Our main objective is to combat auto theft. While in this tactical unit I was in multiple foot pursuits, of fleeing car theft suspects. I found that having the FreeMic 200 not only enhanced my safety, but it also allowed me to move more freely when jumping fences, and controlling combative suspects. The sound quality and reliability are unsurpassed. I highly recommend every law enforcement officer should have this product of break through technology. FreeLinc has truly developed products with the Public Safety professional in mind. Take it from me, I have been in Law Enforcement a total of 18 years. I started as a Armed Security Officer in 1989, and then transitioned into a full time Police Officer. I have used almost every two way radio manufactured working for various security companies. I can only wish this product was available back then. This product also aided in my popularity, every time I enter a room someone has to ask “Where did you get that? Your Wireless, WOW!!” I am COMPLETELY SATISFIED.
-Police Officer Torrence L. Minatee, City Of Newark, NJ, Police Department

“Just wanted to let you know I’ve been using my FreeLinc FreeMic system for several weeks and have been very pleased with its performance. There has been one downside, however, some of the guys I work with saw how well it works and have referred to me in rather unflattering terms since they don’t have one too. One of our resident electronics “experts” who predicted I would be sending it back ASAP has also been impressed with its performance, especially since he is in a position to hear my radio traffic on a regular basis.”
- Sgt. Ron Miller, Sedalia, MO Police Department

To whom it may concern; I purchased the FreeMic 200 at the beginning of 2007 and have been using it 5 days a week since then. I could not be more satisfied with its performance. Sound quality is outstanding and battery life is phenomenal. Great Product.

“As a thirty-one year veteran of law enforcement, I have seen companies and technologies come and go. The one defining factor in the success of the product is not just the product itself, but the quality of the customer service accompanying the product.

I became a FreeLinc customer after reading an ad in a law enforcement magazine. I visited your web site and contacted my regional sales rep, Dewey Garner. Dewey spent time on the telephone with me, explaining and exhorting your wireless products. He sold me on the products, hands down. I have now tried both the FreeMotion and the FreeMic.

Yesterday my adapter failed. That happens, especially with police products and new technology. I have learned over the years that sometimes a mechanical problem should be expected. What I did not expect was the quick and professional response of Scott in your service department and Dewey. After trying to reset the adaptor, Scott told me that he would contact me after checking into a couple of issues. He also said he would let Dewey know what was happening. Not being a believer, I called Dewey. He told me that not only had he talked to Scott, but that I would be receiving another adaptor, overnight. All I can say is WOW! I’m impressed.

The products speak for themselves. The quality and freedom they offer is unsurpassed. My dispatchers wanted to know what I was doing different after I started using my FreeLinc hookup because my voice sounder better, clearer, and easier to understand, especially when I was standing on the street. I am as equally impressed with the ease of use and pairing as I am with quality of the mike, headset, and adaptor.

You should be very proud of your staff and the service they are offering to the law enforcement community. I am not sure which makes me happier, the FreeLinc product or the company representatives. Either way, I am a FreeLinc customer for life.”

“On 03-04-2007 I received the cordless FreeLinc Microphone for Trial and Evaluation. The first thing I immediately noticed is the light weight and good ergonomics such as where the PTT button is located and the volume controls. The mic also has a standard earphone plug on the top so that it can easily be used in extremely noisy environments or during meetings. I then took the radio out to the north end of town and while it did not allow for a signal in places where no signal was present before (Paces River Apts) it did make the difference in the areas where previously I could get a signal by taking the radio out of the holder such as SC161 and Riverview Rd. In these locations the handheld worked from the holster. The only reason I can find for this is that maybe by not having a cord touching the antenna all or the signal was transmitted and not lost in contact with the microphone cord. I see this additional coverage while in the holster to be a tremendous safety advantage. An additional safety feature is that the officer can activate the PTT button on the radio that will activate the microphone. This allows the officer to more discreetly activate the radio and communicate in a move covert manor. This also will allow officers to communicate without raising their arm (like you would with corded mic or no mic) which can be a safety issue. I compared this to the corded mic with an antenna and the corded mic without the antenna. The range is similar to the corded with the antenna but without the aggravation of the antenna and the straight cord which is more easily caught on items and the corded without the antenna has a cord that you have to deal with and the range of the radio is diminished significantly. In short I would prefer the FreeLinc Microphone over all of the current options. In fact I would like to keep this one but if that is not a possibility who do you want me to pass it to next. Do you have the information where individual could purchase this mic? If you have any further questions please let me know.”
- Lt. Biggers, Rock Hill PD, S.C.

“I have had my mic for approximately 8 months. I was the first officer with my department to test the mic. I was unfortunate to be in three foot pursuits while testing the mic. I was very impressed with my new mic !!! With the old mic (the cord) always came loose from my uniform and fell to the ground leaving me unable to transmit to my dispatch. With my FreeLinc mic I was able to transmit and the mic held to me and my uniform like a champ. I think the FreeLinc mic is a very valuable tool for law enforcement. The mic is definitely made for officer safety and is very officer friendly. I expect to see great things from FreeLinc. After testing the mic midland county sheriffs’ office purchased a mic for each patrol man and the midland county swat team. I have spoken with the guys (patrol deputy’s and swat team ) they think the mic is great. Thank you so much for inventing an item that makes my job easier. ”
- Kris Hoban, Patrol Sergeant, Midland County Sheriff’s Office - Additional Testimonial

”I currently evaluate new communications technology for LAPD. I have never seen anything like the FreeLinc FreeMotion 200 wireless headset. I have tested the FeeMotion 200, and we are very excited.”
- Hugo Goa, City of Los Angeles, ITA Communications

“I just finished an evaluation of your Free Linc wireless microphone for our department and was very impressed to say the least. Officer safety is detrimental to this profession and just the thought of not having to worry about a suspect grabbing the antenna and pulling you to the ground is a selling point for me. The wireless mic is simple to use and had no problem getting out in areas where our cabled or coiled microphones were unable to transmit. The wireless mic solves the problem of your body shielding the antenna allowing your radio transmissions to be free of interference even when standing on the interstate while conducting traffic stops. The equipment is simple to use and easy to setup. Thanks again for providing equipment and support to the law enforcement profession.”
-Detective Greg Messmer, Town and Country Police Dept., St. Louis, MO

“Our Special Operations Unit thoroughly tested the FreeMotion 200 headset. We found it to be reliable in all sorts of environments; we really put it through the ringer. It allowed our undercover officers to communicate while maintaining their cover and it worked great for the back-up officers.”
- George Mumma, Special Operations Unit, Jefferson County (CO) District Attorney’s Office

“Our guys like the flexibility, the advantage of not having the wire, and the freedom that the FreeMotion™ 200 allows.”
- Captain Ambrose, Danvers Police Department, Massachussetts

“I was pleasantly surprised by the FreeLinc technology when I first came across it at the IACP conference in Miami. Communications is always a problem in this industry and the FreeMotion™ 200 allows you to communicate in a hands free environment. The clarity of the audio is excellent, it is easy to operate, it is lightweight, and it has worked very well for officers who work detail in situations where it is normally hard to hear their radio.”
- Chief R. Busick, Swanzey Police Department, New Hampshire

“Our patrol and motor units like the use of the FreeMotion™ 200 because it is a user-friendly device that makes our communication hands free. Our officers can be more mobile and quick to respond without any wires attached.”
- Dennis Coutoure, Cumberland Police Department, Rhode Island

“The FreeMotion™ 200 is a multi-use technology. I use the wireless headset during special events and other high noise activities, as well as for dignitary protection. It has superior volume quality for high noise environments and is also the perfect device for executive protection routine where privacy and stability are of the foremost priority.”
- Joseph Nardella, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Massachusetts State House Branch

“FreeMotion 200 headsets were a perfect fit for the DPS. In addition to performing remarkably well, their small size and light weight made them comfortable to wear—I actually forgot I was wearing mine. What’s more, their hands-free convenience and tangle-free safety let us maintain communication while keeping full focus on the environment surrounding our guest.”
- Steven Healy, Chief of Police, Princeton University Department of Public Safety

“I am a Paradise Valley Motor Officer and was assigned to the Presidential detail a few weeks ago during Presidnet Bush’s visit to our town. Most of our team was equipped with the FreeMic 200 cordless microphone with earpieces which came in really handy since we were dealing with several protesters who stated they were going to charge the motorcade when the President left the resort. The staff was able to pass valuable information onto all officers dealing with the protesters without them knowing we were receiving this important information. We didn’t need to brief each officer one at a time taking them away from the front line with the protesters. All received the same information at the same time. Needless to say the protesters did not charge the motorcade since we were ready for them. The FreeMic 200 made a tremendous difference in this case – which I am sure will be as useful for other important details in the near future.”
- Officer Kevin Albert, Paradise Valley Police, Arizona

“After using my FreeMotion 200 for a week, I feel it is the perfect radio tool for the courtroom setting. I have to have absolute silence from my radio, pager, and cellphone while in the courtroom. The FreeMotion 200 allows me to receive radio traffic and then move to an area where I can transmit without interrupting the court proceedings. When court is not in session, I can remove the earpiece and switch the adapter off for normal radio use. I’ll recommend this product to anyone that will listen.”
- Court Deputy Chris Marsh, White County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois

“In a tropical climate such as Hawaii, it takes quality equipment to do a quality job. As an emergency responder with the Oahu Civil Defense Agency in Honolulu, Hawaii we heavily rely upon our communication equipment to keep us functional in times of disasters. I have used the FreeMic200 for a few months and I have discovered the amazing features and benefits of working with this product. Overall the FreeMic200 performs well beyond the traditional speaker mics in features, and also with the benefit of a light-weight and cord free style. Overall I am very pleased with this FreeLinc product and can’t wait to see what your company has to offer in the future.”
- Nelson Toda, Oahu Civil Defense Agency, Honolulu, Hawaii

“The FreeMic 200 was easily and securely attached (and unattached) to a variety of different locations on the Marine’s flak jacket and backpack straps. The PTT button was easy to use while wearing gloves.”
- U.S. Marine Corps Air Defender

“The FreeMotion 200 was easy to hear received transmissions while surrounded by the ambient noise of a diesel vehicle driving at 45 mph. The battery lasted for an entire day.”
- U.S. Marine Corps Command and Control Systems Officer

“I used the FreeLinc wireless earpieces on a number of occasions while patrolling subway systems…I can hear what’s going on around me without revealing my cover, and this is very important. The earpieces worked very well, even in the noisy train environment. I think the FreeMotion 200 is a very good tool.”
